Internet versus WWW The Hypertext Transfer Protocol (http://) is the protocol of the World Wide Web (WWW, Web); it is one of many different protocols. Many people assume the WWW is the Internet. This confusion is likely due to the increasing popularity of the Web, and its "usurpation" of roles fulfilled by other protocols in use on the Internet. Other protocols include: e-mail, telnet, gopher, news, chat, etc. With their Web browsers, users can access these other protocols (gopher, e-mail, and news) without using additional application software.
